This article offers a comparative analysis of Hans Jonas’s Ethics of Responsibility and Shiʿi jurisprudence in confronting technological power. It examines how two distinct traditions—modern philosophy and Islamic revelation—reach a common conclusion on the need to restrain technologies that threaten human existence. Using a comparative analytical approach, the study shows that Jonas’s principle of responsibility overlaps functionally with key Shiʿi juridical concepts, including human trusteeship, the principle of lā ḍarar (no harm), and the objective of preserving humankind (ḥifẓ al-nawʿ). It argues that Shiʿi jurisprudence embodies an institutionalized ethics of responsibility, providing practical mechanisms for limiting technological risks. Ayatollah Khamenei’s fatwa prohibiting nuclear weapons is examined as an example of this convergence. Despite differences in foundations and sources of authority, both approaches support the preventive avoidance of destructive technologies. This convergence provides a basis for dialogue between Islamic theology and contemporary ethics, particularly in technology, environmental justice, and intergenerational responsibility.
