Background and Objective: In armed conflicts, psychological breakdown and collective disintegration are as dangerous as military defeat. The two main shields against these threats are "social cohesion" and "a hopeful outlook on the future." The Ramadan War is a prominent example of a resistance in which religious beliefs were able to produce and reproduce these two elements at the height of the crisis. However, existing research has either remained within secular frameworks or merely described events, and none have systematically analyzed the link between Shiite theological foundations and psychological mechanisms. The aim of this study is to identify and analyze these mediating mechanisms.
Method: This qualitative research was conducted using thematic analysis with a deductive-inductive approach. The textual corpus included the Holy Qur'an, Nahj al-Balaghah, Sahifah of Imam Khomeini, Sahifah Sajjadiyyah, and theoretical texts in social psychology (Durkheim, Snyder, Putnam, Pargament, and Van Zomeren).
Findings: Four main mechanisms were extracted: 1) Highlighting sacred collective identity through ritual practices and the concept of Wilayat-Ummah, 2) Recreating faith-based social capital through norms of self-sacrifice and institutional trust in religious leadership, 3) Transforming anticipatory hope into agentic hope based on dynamic trust in God (tawakkul) and commitment to the divine promise of victory, and 4) The sacred meaning-making of suffering and death through the narrative of divine trial and the idea of martyrdom. These mechanisms operated in a self-reinforcing cycle.
