Many early modern thinkers, from a descriptive perspective, predicted that modernity's civilizational trajectory would involve humanity’s continuous distancing from religion until its eventual disappearance. From a normative standpoint, they emphasized the necessity of replacing the authority of religion with autonomous reason and empirical knowledge. With the advent of the postmodern or late modernity era, although the rationalism and scientism of the preceding period were criticized, the authority of human desires and the liberation of individuals from all limitations were promoted as the replacement for previous forms of authority.
Thus, modernity has been in opposition to religion in terms of its core indicators, leading to the strengthening of secularism. However, the civilizational trajectory tells a different story. The secularization anticipated as an outcome of modernity was expected to encompass all aspects of human life, including institutional structures, individual life, and layers of consciousness. Yet, since the mid-20th century, we have witnessed the rise of religious movements, each influencing human life to varying degrees, from consciousness to institutional and socio-political dimensions. Examining the factors contributing to this shift necessitates the development of new theories offering a distinct explanation of religion's place in human life.
