This study aims to clarify the meaning of sex and gender and extract their characteristics within Judith Butler's framework, critically examining these concepts as foundational in gender studies. Butler, one of the most influential contemporary thinkers in this field, considers both concepts to be socio-cultural constructs. She introduces gender as a performative act shaped through the repetition of actions and social norms, devoid of any fixed essence or substance.
Butler's theory of gender seeks to challenge binary gender systems, emphasizing the fluidity and multiplicity of gender identities. She regards gender as a social performance and focuses on the role of language, discourse, and cultural systems in constructing this concept. Her perspective allows for the recognition of diverse identities.
An analysis of Butler’s views reveals that her conceptualization, which denies essentialism, fixed nature, and inherent substance, ultimately constructing sex and gender, is incompatible with Islamic perspectives. Islamic views affirm the existence of a stable identity, lack of fluidity, essence, substance, and an objective reality. These contradictions highlight the necessity of developing indigenous theories aligned with the Islamic-Iranian cultural framework.
This research employs a library-based methodology for data collection and utilizes qualitative content analysis for the interpretation and examination of the findings.
