Ayn Rand was a Russian-born American philosopher, novelist and playwright whose interpretation of ethical egoism is one of the most important interpretations of this theory. The current article tries to review, analyze and criticize her ethical egoism. Rand is a proponent of intellectual egoism and rationalism is a fundamental element in her ethical theory. Having reviewed and analyzed Rand's ethical egoism, we will study and criticize her theory. Criticism of Rand's image of self is the most fundamental critique of her theory which is a ground for other criticisms to a great extent. Finally an ethical theory known as ego-altruism will be introduced. This theory proposes balance and equilibrium between self and others as the pivot of ethics.
Ethical egoism is one of the most important ethical theories in the field of normative ethics. According to this theory, the sole ethical criterion is self interest and one's ethical duty is to maximize his benefit.
